About St Annes Hall

history

Miss Elizabeth Bertie-Mathew wanted to provide an alternative place of relaxation for the working men of Babbacombe, enabling local men to secure ‘refreshments of a non-intoxicating kind’.  So, in 1884 she gifted £2000 to allow this to happen.

Whilst there may be more modern community spaces for hire, St Annes Hall remains very distinctive being a good example of a 19th Century building decorated in late Arts & Crafts style.  It is a venue with character.

In our fairly recent past St Anne’s Hall, like many distinct buildings slipped into near dereliction which often results in old buildings being disposed of for redevelopment; had it not been for four visionary and determined Trustees taking over ownership and successfully gaing Heritage Lottery Funding it would not have become the community resource it is today.

Who manages St Anne’s Hall?

The hall is owned and run by the charity St Anne’s Hall Babbacombe Limited (registered charity number 1119212)

Trustees give their time voluntarily work to make the hall available to local people at affordable cost.  If you have a little spare time and would like to know how you could help just get in touch with Mark or Sarah on 01803 614477.
